Ovulation Detection

There are several ways to determine if ovulation is imminent or if it has occurred. The BBT measures the rise in body temperature that occurs immediately prior to ovulation, the urinary test kit measures the amount of the hormone LH in the urine, ultrasounds are used to monitor the sizes of the follicles, and the level of the hormone progesterone rises after successful ovulation. Basal Body Temperature (BBT) The temperature of the body rises slightly after ovulation.

The body temperature is taken before arising from bed every morning and the information is recorded on a chart. This is done over repeat cycles and an ovulatory pattern is established. A rise in temperature indicates that ovulation has occurred.

This test is not as accurate as monitoring levels of LH in the urine. Urinary LH Kits LH kits measure the amount of luteinizing hormone present in the urine. The LH level increases abruptly twenty four hours prior to ovulation. LH kits are used for timing tests, and intercourse. These tests predict ovulation very accurately.

Progesterone Levels

Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum, a structure formed by the follicle after ovulation. Once a pregnancy is established, progesterone is produced by the placenta. Levels of progesterone increase after ovulation and progesterone causes the endometrium to thicken and become more vascular to accept the developing embryo. Low levels of progesterone may indicate that "quality" ovulation did not occur.
