The laparoscopy is usually performed at a hospital as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Two small incisions are made in the lower part of the stomach, one at the belly button and one above the pubic bone.
A scope is passed through one of the openings and the surgical tools are manipulated through the other. The abdomen is filled with gas allowing the doctor to see the surfaces of the ovaries, tubes, uterus and other organs.
If possible, the laparoscopy for infertility should be performed by a reproductive specialist who has extensive training and experience in microsurgery.
Oftentimes, these specialists can treat conditions during the diagnostic procedure. Some studies indicate that the presence of small amounts of endometriosis in the pelvic cavity may reduce IVF success rates by creating a hostile inflammatory environment. The surgeon must exercise care to remove all of the endometriosis.
Please be sure and read the section on why a reproductive
specialist should be chosen to perform the laparoscopy. Many
studies demonstrate that seeking care from a specialist
early in treatment is more cost efficient. These physicians
are trained to quickly diagnose the many conditions
that could be contributing to a couple's infertility.
Specialists
are much more likely to begin the appropriate treatment
sooner thus reducing overall treatment costs.
