Fertility Tests- Hysterosalpingogram, Hysteroscopy

Hysterosalpingogram The hysterosalpingogram is performed on an outpatient basis and is used to examine the uterus and tubes. The hysterosalpingogram is useful in identifying tubal blockage or abnormal conditions such as a bicornate uterus. Radio opaque dye is injected into the tubes and its passage through the tubes to the uterus is observed via x-ray.

Many times polyps, fibroids, or other abnormalities can also be seen. Once the egg is ovulated it must travel through the fallopian tubes and after fertilization enter the uterus. If there is a tubal blockage, the dye will not pass and is clearly seen on X-ray. Hysteroscopy The hysteroscope involves passing an optical tube through the vagina into the uterus.

The uterus is inflated with gas making the uterine lining visible to the physician. The hysteroscope permits a more detailed analysis of the uterus than the hysterosalpingogram. Abnormalities in the uterus, including polyps or fibroids, can be seen with the hysteroscope.

Post Coital Test (PCT)

The post coital test may be used to evaluate the cervical mucus and sperm survival. Sometimes the female's body produces antibodies that can destroy the male's sperm. In the post coital test, the patient comes to the office after intercourse and a sample of the cervical mucus is taken. The sample is examined for the presence of viable sperm and cervical mucus "quality". There are many variables which can affect the results of the post coital test which limits its clinical relevance. (Contributed by Infertility Center of Houston)
